I’m not certain when it started, but at some point in my life I became fascinated with construction and restoration. Be it homes, furniture or clothing, I loved being involved in the transformation of forgotten, abused and dated objects.
It’s possible this passion began while following my grandmother around to garage sales each weekend (Yes, I was born in the South.) Perhaps I gained inspiration by watching my mother sew dresses, pillows and Halloween costumes. Exactly when my fascination with making, fixing and changing things arose I’m not sure, but this desire has never faded. It started out with simple sewing projects, moved on to furniture stripping and staining, then painting my bedroom as a teenager.
College took me away from my Cotton Candy pink bedroom (yes, I am cringing too). The chance to work as a fashion model took me to Paris, where my life veered from my original plan of completing my college degree.
I purchased my first home during my early twenties, and when not traveling the world on photo shoots, I spent time remodeling that house. I bought and began remodeling another home a year later as a second home/investment. Marriage took me away from my first two homes. My husband had already upgraded his home (his childhood home), so there was little for me to do there. It was not until I divorced that I bought my third home. With each home I gained more confidence and more experience with all forms of remodeling. I am now on my fourth home and with each house, I’ve taken on more challenging remodeling projects.
With my modeling career winding down and my children both teenagers, I have returned to school to finish that elusive college degree. I’m currently enrolled in Environmental Studies.
When I was approached to do a blog for remodelingadvice.com, it was like slipping on a couture gown. It just fit. I want to inspire people to take on remodeling projects by sharing my own experiences—the good, the bad and the ugly. And I want to hear about what you’re doing with your home. Maybe I can help, maybe I can learn.
